A regional German court in the city of Mannheim has dismissed a patent lawsuit filed by Qualcomm against Apple. The court claimed the suit was groundless and that Apple did not violate any of Qualcomm’s patents by “the installation of its chips in Apple’s smartphones.” Qualcomm says that it disagrees with the decision of the Mannheim’s court and that it will appeal against the decision. “Apple has a history of infringing our patents,” said Don Rosenberg, Qualcomm’s executive vice president and general counsel. “While we disagree with the Mannheim court’s decision and will appeal, we will continue to enforce our (intellectual property) rights against Apple worldwide.” Qualcomm had previously been handed over a win in a separate patent case against Apple by the Munich court. By now it’s old news that the iPhone XS lineup and the iPhone XR use Intel chips under the hood, rather than a mix of Intel and Qualcomm. And while some have speculated that Apple had always wanted to use Intel-only for that particular year of iPhones, it turns out that’s not the case at all. The Cupertino company books 50 business class tickets on flights to Shanghai from the SFO airport from United Airlines every day. As another year ticks by, more of Apple’s older devices become officially listed as obsolete or vintage, depending on the region. 9to5Mac is reporting on Friday that the late-2012 iMac is going to become listed as another obsolete device on Wednesday, January 30. In California and Turkey the device will be listed as “vintage”, which means in those areas the device will continue to be supported by the company as dictated by local law. However, as noted in the report, even outside of those regions the late-2012 iMac can still be repaired in some cases, thanks to the Repair Vintage Apple Products Pilot program, which was officially introduced in November of last year . The latest numbers from Gartner show that Mac shipments declined by nearly 3.8 percent in Q4, 2018. Apple is estimated to have shipped 4.9 million Macs in Q4, 2018 for a total market share of 7.2 percent. In comparison, the company had shipped 5.1 million Macs in the same quarter in 2017. Despite the decline in shipments though, Apple’s market share increased marginally from 7.1 percent in Q4, 2017 to 7.2 percent in Q4, 2018. This is because the overall PC shipment itself declined by a total of 4.3 percent, with the likes of Dell, Acer, and Asus suffering a far worse decline in their PC shipments than Apple. Apple appears to be fast-tracking the next release for iOS, as it seeds another beta to developers. Apple today officially seeded the fourth beta of iOS 12.1.3 to developers and public beta testers. The latest beta arrives just three days after the company seeded the third developer beta for the same software. That earlier beta did not add any specific forward-facing new features to the mix, which isn’t too surprising given the scale of the minor update. As to why Apple is seeding another developer beta so quickly remains to be seen. To update, registered developers simply need to go into Settings –> General –> Software Update and follow the onscreen instructions. Apple has rolled out turn-by-turn directions for Apple Maps in India. Right now, the service is only available in selected metro cities of the country. Similar to Google Maps, Apple is also offering users option to book cab rides from Uber or Ola right from within the app.  Up until now, one could not use Apple Maps in India to get turn-by-turn directions to any place in India. After today though, Apple Maps will provide users with proper turn-by-turn directions for the place they search for. For now, Apple has rolled out turn-by-turn directions in Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, and Delhi. Other key cities are expected to gain the feature soon as well. While Apple has added turn-by-turn directions to Apple Maps, most iPhone users are likely going to stick to Google Maps for directions. If you purchased a high-end TV from Vizio or Samsung in 2018, chances are it will be getting an update to gain AirPlay 2 support. All high-end TVs from the four OEMs launching this year will feature AirPlay 2 support. While Samsung is updating some of its TVs from 2018 to add HomeKit support, Vizio is the only company out of the four to update TVs launched as far back as 2017. While TVs from all three OEMs will support AirPlay 2, HomeKit support is only going to be available on TVs from LG, Vizio, and Sony. One of the biggest announcements of 2019, surprisingly, revolves around AirPlay 2 and its broadening availability . Courtesy of the holiday break, Apple took some time off from seeding new beta releases. But now the grind is back on. Apple today officially seeded the third developer beta of iOS 12.1.3 and watchOS 5.1.3. As is par for the course, these particular beta seeds are specifically meant for developers out there testing the prerelease software. For registered developers, the new software is available to download as an over-the-air (OTA) software update on their registered devices. To update to iOS 12.1.3, developers simply need to open Settings –> General –> Software Update and follow the onscreen instructions. The latest beta can also be downloaded directly from Apple’s developer portal. To update to watchOS 5.1.3, developers need to make sure that the Apple Watch is on its charger, has at least 50 percent battery life, and that the smartwatch is within range and connected to an iPhone. Apple’s updated AirPlay 2 page points to all leading TV manufacturers offering AirPlay 2 integration in their TVs.  With AirPlay 2 integration, iOS and Mac users will be able to directly play content on their Smart TV without requiring an Apple TV. So, you can easily stream Netflix on your AirPlay 2 compatible Smart TV without the need for an Apple TV. Even better, users can stream music on their AirPlay 2 compatible TV and then sync it with compatible AirPlay speakers in their home. Samsung and Apple are competing companies, and it wasn’t too long ago that the companies were going at it in lengthy legal battles. But sometimes things change, at least a little bit. Samsung made a bit of waves over the weekend when the company officially announced that, starting in 2019, Samsung’s smart TVs will officially add support for not only Apple’s AirPlay 2 wireless technology, but also support for movies and TV shows from iTunes. With the latter bit, there will be a dedicated application on the smart TVs that will give access to the digital content from iTunes, similar to how Netflix works. Samsung smart TV owners that have support for the new feature will be able to buy content from iTunes, with resolution up to 4K on supported titles. Apple has never traditionally taken part in Consumer Electronics Show (CES) which happens at the beginning of every year in Las Vegas. However, for this year’s CES, while Apple has not taken part in the trade show, it is going to make its presence felt with its “What happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone” billboard that it has put up near the Las Vegas Convention Center. The area is also adorned with many high profile hotels. With thousands of media journalists, tech press, and folks from the media industry visiting CES over the next week, Apple could not have selected a better spot for this billboard. With this billboard, it would make its presence feel at CES despite not being there on the show floor. The hardware vulnerabilities Spectre and Meltdown were big deals leading into 2018, but it looks like Apple will avoid major legal action in regard to a class action lawsuit filed against the company. If you’ll recall, a class action lawsuit was filed against Apple in January of 2018 , with the complaint at the time saying, “Apple knew about the Spectre and Meltdown security defects as early as June of last year, and, as such, did not inform its customer base in a meaningful timeframe. In addition to that, the complaint states that Apple cannot implement a fix for Spectre and/or Meltdown without heavily impacting the performance of those processors”. Apple, for its part, did patch the issue for both iOS devices and macOS machines out in the wild, but that did little to assuage folks affected by the issue in the first place.
